Before. Miles "Pudge" Halter's whole existence has been one big nonevent, and his obsession with famous last words has only made him crave the "Great Perhaps" (François Rabelais, poet) even more. He heads off to the sometimes crazy, possibly unstable, and anything-but-boring world of Culver Creek Boarding School, and his life becomes the opposite of safe. Because down the hall is Alaska Young. The gorgeous, clever, funny, sexy, self-destructive, screwed-up, and utterly fascinating Alaska Young, who is an event unto herself. She pulls Pudge into her world, launches him into the Great Perhaps, and steals his heart.

After. Nothing is ever the same. (Goodreads)
I was really expecting and hoping to like this book a lot more than I did. I think this is one of those books you really need to be in the right mood to read. While I absolutely love John Greens writing style, I just found this story lacking and I think my main issue was with the characters. I wasn't able to connect with any of the characters in this book. I didn't really find any redeeming qualities in Alaska or Pudge for that matter. I appreciate where the story went and why it was written and its purpose, but the characters kind of ruined it for me.

While reading the first half of this book I found myself asking "where is this story going? whats the point?" and I was struggling reading it. The constant smoking and drinking was a big turn off for me and I think thats just because I don't relate to that at all. I liked the pranking aspect of the book, I thought that was kind of fun. I did find the second half of this book to be much better, the twist was very unexpected and I liked the guessing game of trying to figure out what had happened.

Overall, I thought this book was just okay. John Green's writing style was really the only thing that kept me going. I would say its worth a read, but its not a book I will be picking up again.

It was okay...

  1. I've wanted to read this for awhile, but have put it off because I've heard a lot of people give it around 3/4 stars and I have so many other books that have much better ratings.. It doesn't mean I won't eventually read it or anything of course...
BTW I love the New Girl gif! :D

    1. New girl is my LOVE! haha and I really think you need to be in the right kind of mood to read this, but the characters really weren't relatable and I just didn't like them!! But I'm glad I at least gave it a read! ha
