St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger...

Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever. (Goodreads)
I really enjoyed this book! it's been a long time since I've read a real vampire book and this was a great choice to get back into the genre. I loved the characters and the story. It moved at a good pace and had enough excitement to keep me interested the whole way through! I've heard the series only gets better and I am looking forward to continuing on with the story!

I think Rose was a really strong female lead and I enjoyed the fact that she would put her friendship above all else. It's nice to have a story thats more focused on friendship rather than a love interest. I did find the relationship between Rose and Dimitri to be a bit strange, mostly because I'm not really sure where it came from, it seemed to develop so randomly. I do however really enjoy the Lissa/Christian relationship! I always love an underdog, but maybe I'm speaking too soon, who knows, he could turn out to be a bad guy after all!

I was really surprised with the twist at the end of the book, I don't want to give away any spoilers but the betrayal that occurred was really surprising, and I love that in a book! It wasn't at all what I was expecting! Which only makes me look forward to the rest of the books even more!

I don't think I even need to say how much I disliked Mia, she was just the worst! Ick, not a fan!

Overall this book was a fantastic series starter and I wish I had read it sooner! I am looking forward to seeing how it looks on the big screen!... Although after watching the previews... I am a bit nervous!
